2023 - Claire Marshall
2022 - Erin Schrantz
2021 - Samantha Tabone
The FHS Women in STEM Scholarship Committee is thrilled to share that we have selected Samantha Tabone as the 2021 recipient. Samantha has been laser-focused on her goal to become a Physician's Assistant with a focus on Pediatric Oncology. She has aced her AP Biology class, taken a college-level Health and Safety course, and is currently interning at The Chautauqua Center under two medical doctors. Her passion for the field is evident in her essay where she described her personal experiences dealing with loved ones diagnosed with cancer.
In her glowing letter of recommendation, Dr. McNaughtan says of Samantha, "I have rarely seen someone so humbly eager to work so hard and learn so much." We are confident Samantha will excel in her program at Daemen College, and make great contributions to her field!
2020 - Lauren Marshall
The FHS Women in STEM Scholarship Committee is thrilled to share that we have selected Lauren Marshall as the 2020 recipient. We were blown away by Lauren's ability to participate in so many sports and activities while maintaining top grades in difficult coursework. Lauren's riveting essay brought us into the moment that she decided to pursue Environmental Sciences. Lauren has not only cultivated her own passion for nature, but is already spreading that passion to others through her volunteer work with the Quest Backpacking program. Lauren also managed to find time to give back to her community and the environment through multiple Community Clean-Ups.
With the existential crisis of climate change looming, it is inspiring to see young women like Lauren committing to action. We look forward to the contributions Lauren will make to Environmental Sciences & Sustainability at SUNY Binghamton and beyond!
2019 - Lindsay Lotter
Lindsay's incredible passion for the field of medicine has already led her to pursue three internships as a high school student, including one in Poland. We were impressed and empathetic with Lindsay's essay where she discussed experiencing the gender disparities and discrimination that exist in the medical field.
On top of pursuing her passion through internships and volunteer work, Lindsay chose challenging and relevant coursework which she excelled at while working at a part-time job. The scholarship committee has full confidence that Lindsay will accomplish all of her career goals, and we are thrilled to support her in this small way.
Lindsay will be attending the University of Maryland, College Park.
2018 - Lydia Bird
Lydia exhibits great enthusiasm for chemical engineering and the ambition to succeed. We were impressed that she took the initiative to gain real-world experience by joining the SUNY Fredonia Chemistry Lab as an intern during her junior year. Lydia’s essay about plastics was thought-provoking and demonstrated awareness and understanding of one of the biggest environmental issues of our time. We were extremely impressed with Lydia’s ability to maintain nearly perfect grades while participating in a varied array of extracurriculars and working part-time.
Currently, 67% of Chemical Engineering degree-holders in the U.S. are men. We are excited to support Lydia as she breaks down barriers in this field.
Lydia will be attending Northeastern University in Boston.
2017 - Abigail Zentz
Abigail's passion for technology and engineering shone through in her essay, class choices, extracurriculars, and recommendation letter. We were impressed with her efforts to seek out engineers to shadow and her participation and success in the "STEM Wars" competitions. Most importantly, we applaud Abigail's perseverance in male-dominated classes, and her insightful recognition that diverse perspectives in STEM can only improve these fields with new ideas and solutions.
Abigail will be attending Jamestown Community College for Engineering.
